Casper’s unique location offers a variety of one-of-a-kind experiences. Perhaps most notably, Casper’s storied history is some of the richest in the West. Modern-day Casper has been created from a past that includes: American Indian trails, fur trappers, pioneers, a thriving energy industry, abundant outdoor recreation, dinosaurs and the Wild West. To truly experience the various facets of history, it’s best to explore them first-hand.
At the center of Central Wyoming’s historic story sits the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center. This world-class museum is free to visit and features hands-on exhibits and multi-media experiences. Here, visitors can experience what life on the plains was like in the 1800’s at the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center as thousands of pioneers made their way West. If you’re looking for an even more immersive experience of life on the trail, it can be found on a trek with Historic Trials West. Ride horseback or on a Conestoga wagon in the ruts of the Oregon Trail just outside of town. These experiences range from hours to days and are complete with a firsthand look at the trail, history lessons from experts and chuck wagon cookouts.
Though Casper is known for its western history, the spirit of the West is still alive today in the modern city. Casper’s western roots show off during the annual College National Finals Rodeo. Every June, hundreds of the best college rodeo athletes converge on Casper to compete for the national championship title. While you’re here for CNFR, you won’t want to miss a chance to visit the iconic Lou Taubert Ranch Outfitters in downtown Casper. Stop by this 100-year old western store and browse the inventory of over 10,000 boots, have a cowboy hat shaped just for you and get fitted for your western adventure.
